I just had a thought about the book you're writing, Franklin... Have you considered releasing the first chapter and a proof of concept on your substack to "gain an audience" to then take to a publisher as evidence of said audience to possibly get a pay advance? Cause I saw the way the timeline or feed "lit up" when you joined Substack and I don't know if you're aware but there's a pretty significant film community on here dubbed FilmStack and I think they are absolutely your "target audience."
I’d re do Monopoly. But it’s film and tv production.
You’d have Writer, Director, Producer and Studio Boss. One wildcard a joker if you will, the Investor.
The goal would be similar to Monopoly in that it’s based on a real thing.
Real estate and the game makes you go through all of the antics of that industry. I’d do likewise here.
You have to perform whatever role your piece plays. Get it? You want to be the Producer, then you have to do what that role is. There’d be a bank -and with a roll of the dice interest rates might go up or down.
The game would include a marketing budget for your films. Like Monopoly you’d have actual cash or something to show the money.
There are multiple studios, some bigger than others. And all of you must compete against one another.
I really think not knowing how the money moves is still not discussed enough.
Whatever role you chose you must adhere to that. Say you go for the Actor (we all know how that piece would look🎭- your money would reflect that role) you have to figure out how to get to NY or LA?
You have to audition for roles or maybe go to an acting school. There would be a scandal aspect too after all the Monopoly game has a jail 😆
Seriously though I’d put a bunch of film students together and make them go through the entire process of film and tv creation soup to nuts.
It helps if you don’t play the role that you are in school for. I’d chose the most complimentary role first. I’m a writer, I’d chose the acting role. Then go to producer.
I don't think anyone should apologise for the thing that they made and gave away for free.
Great list! I would humbly like to add the TED talk, “The Danger of a Single Story.” It was given by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
